Amethon Solutions, a leading provider of analytics and insight solutions to mobile network operators, and Bytemobile, Inc., the industry leader in video optimization and Smart Capacity™ solutions for mobile network operators today published a report on the expected impact of the 2012 Summer Olympics on operators’ networks.
The report is based on collaborative analysis of mobile data trends using Amethon’s Mobile Analytics platform during major sporting events of the past 12 months. Amethon and Bytemobile predict that operators will see a 211% increase in traffic worldwide during the Olympic Games in London.
As a result of their analysis, Amethon and Bytemobile also forecast the following:
- The volume of mobile video usage will double, accounting for 50% or more of total data traffic on 3G and 4G networks.
- Mobile advertising volume will increase by 118%.
- Twitter activity will spike by more than 118% and Facebook usage by 136%.
The two companies also found that mobile subscriber searches for specific URLs escalate during major sporting events, indicating that users have preferred destinations for checking scores and statistics. These destinations include both sports sites and social networking sites.
“It is clear that sporting events are a key driver of mobile data traffic as a smartphone owners watch live video, video replays and interact other sports fans via social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter.” said Michael Stone, Chief Executive Officer of Amethon Solutions. “The London 2012 Olympic Games is the biggest sporting event on the planet and mobile network operators need to be prepared for resulting increase in mobile data traffic.”
